Apple Shuffles Shuffle Lineup

Less than two months after it?s introduction, Apple has made some changes to the new 2nd generation iPod Shuffle. When it was originally released, it came in one color (Silver), and it shipped with the first generation lollipop earbuds (the ones that hurt my ears after only 20 minutes). Well, Apple has corrected both of what I consider minor problems.

The Shuffle now ships in five different colors, the same as the new Nanos, but with an extra one only available for it. The new orange looks very cool, and compliments the others well. There is no change in specs or features, just more of a choice for what and where you wear your shuffle.

They are also shipping the second generation earbuds, ones that are cushioned and much nicer on the ear lobes. These are the ones that have been shipping with the 5th generation and Nanos for sometime. They are a well designed replacement to the lollipop ones. My ears were pleasantly surprised with how they feel.

So if you have been wavering about getting the shuffle, now is the time. Your choices have just expanded, and it is always nice to have options when you are buying.

Some cool cases at CES

I don?t use cases much anymore, but most of you do. There is a whole discussion going down on cases now in the forums in fact. I ran into a couple companies showing some new cases at CES I wanted to tell you about. One of them I have worked with a lot in the past and the other is one I plan to work with in the future. Both make some good looking cases depending on your needs.

Fortte Cases was showing a ton of custom, hip looking cases. The ones that caught my eye immediately were these below.

The two on the left are of their brand new Excalibur/T-mobile Dash case. This nice looking case has a detatchable flip cover so you can carry it two different ways. They also have a whole line up of clips for different tastes. The snazzy yellow case is one for the Microsoft Zune. Ignore my photography, I am horrible without my tripod, but look below the glass in the Zune case photo. That?s a lot of cases for you there!

Now for the heavy duty users? Otterbox. Otterboxes are not just cases you seal your device in, run it over with a car and then throw in the lake in more. These that I was shown at CES have function in addition to protection.

Notice the Case for the iPod Nano, the wheel can be used. There is a rubber barrier that keeps moisture out! The other cases designed for certain models have real keys that line up with the device to allow use in the case. These are some innovative cases!

There were some other cool cases too, but these were my favorites. Another company, Body Glove, was showing off some cases too! There was a problem though, the boneheads at the booth were running cameras off. I didn?t complain, but they were worried about reverse engineering. Seriously, that?s what she said. Silly. Stick to surf gear for all I care!

iFrogz for iTots

I?m on the lookout for a chewable PDA at the moment? but in the mean time here?s something for the toddlers..
If you?re worried about jnr destroying your iPod with fingers, drool or other ?activity? then maybe you will be interested in the Tadpole from iFrogz?  pop your ipod into it and let them play.

Or you could keep your iPod and just let them have a fisher price musicbox instead, but where?s the geek factor in that

My iPhone Thoughts and some real video

I was unaware that anyone besides ?Apple? had actually seen the iPhone in the flesh, other than the glass case crap they pulled at Mac World. I made a post a few minutes ago in the forums in this thread saying I would reserve judgement until I saw it in ?real? action. I got a pretty fast PM with a link to this video.

Well, this looks quite a bit better than a photo of a dormant device in a glass case?

Anyhow, I think the video shows this device (and I call it a device since I can?t see how it will end up being the iPhone) has some super innovative ideas. Some are cool, some look useless, and some look hard to get used to. Maybe we will have to get used to them if this is the future. I have a couple reservations from the beginning though. Battery Life? I am hearing what they are claiming, but how? How in the hell are you gonna get 5 hours of battery using this as a phone? The thing is super thin with a 3.5? screen that has fancy sensors and a vibrant color, tell me where this juice is going to come from? Next up, Keyboard. A software keyboard will do I guess, but there are lots that are screaming for keyboards these days. What about 3G, why not? There are some rumors floating about this, but nothing official. I hope it is geared purely at non-business consumers, with no 3rd party app support and no exchange server support, this is useless in business. I want to sync outlook with iTunes, yep. I sure do.

Last but not least, the biggest problem facing the iPhone to me is, well? Apple. Such a greedy, overbearing company. They infringe on Cisco?s trademark with one hand, then with the other hand, they jump all over folks for stupid stuff like emulating the ?Look? of this phone. Give me a break, I am not too sure they have a leg stand on with their demands to Paul O?brien of Modaco, asking him to remove LINKS to another website. Apple sure gives me a warm fuzzy. In case you hadn?t heard anything about that? There are some skin hacks that allow you to make your Windows Mobile Phone/PDA or Palm device look like the GUI of the iPhone.

iPod Vending Lives - Las Vegas Hilton Sighting

On several occasions in the last year, I have referenced sighting of the iTune Vending machines. I found this pretty cool, but until today, I had not seen one myself.

Today, at the Las Vegas Hilton, not only did I spot one of these elusive machines, I saw someone feeding their credit card into it. The gentleman was purchasing a charger.

iPod Shuffle Finally Covered

When Apple released the 2nd Generation iPod Shuffle (1gb), I was astounded at the size, how small it was. Two things popped into my mind. One how cool it was, and two, given it?s size and design, there couldn?t be much of an after market for options for it. I was wrong on the second item. There have been several accessories showing up for it, most notably covers to protect it. Several are shown here.

Above is a set that is available from PC Microstore. There are several colors available, and they are semi-transparent silicone material.

Here is picture of BoxWave Corporation?s covers:

These are also a silicone based, semi-transparent case as well.

Finally, here is an entry from the Apple website, so I guess you could say it has Apple?s blessing. These are made by Rhinoskin, a company with a fine reputation for quality cases and accessories. It is a brushed aluminum slip on case.

Most of these covers are available from a variety of dealers and resellers, both online and in stores. Costs range from a couple of dollars to upwards to $20. It is nice to see that there are some options for protecting one?s investment in a quality MP3 player, and it is nice to see that some after market accessories are becoming available for an item that I thought would have none.
